St. Joseph Catholic Church

St. Joseph Catholic Church

Alexandria also had Black Catholics prior to the civil war; they attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church with their Masters.  By 1913, the Black Catholics wanted their own Church.  A committee was formed and by 1915, the cornerstone was laid for the Black Catholic Church named St. Joseph in the neighborhood called the “Uptown” section of Alexandria on Columbus Street.  This section will also focus on some of the St. Mary and St. Joseph’s Catholic Black members that made impact on the history of Alexandria.

  1. Thank you for this information on St. Joseph’s. I hope to be in Alexandria sometime in November. I plan to attend Sunday Mass at St. Joseph’s. I was there a couple of years ago, but was not able to attend Mass there. I am from St. Louis MO and attend St. Alphonsus “Rock” Church, an African American or Black Catholic Church here in St. Louis.
