George K. Combs

George K. Combs – January 13, 1961 – July 7, 2023

George K. Combs was a thoughtful and kind person. He was the Branch Manager at the Alexandria Library Special Collections for over two decades before he retired. I will never forget George assisting me at the Alexandria, Virginia Library. I could depend on George and call him for any research questions that I might have. He was always willing to help.

Recently, I learned of George’s passing. I was in disbelief. George was such a kind soul. He will truly be missed by many whom he came in contact with.

  1. George was an Alexandria treasure. He possessed and institutional knowledge of local and Virginia history. I recall the first time I met him in the late ‘90’s, I was looking for the source of a story about two young boys who climbed a tree near Fort Ward one afternoon. Soon a horse drawn carriage stops in the shade under the tree. It was an open carriage and all the boys could see was a tall man with a tall stovepipe hat sitting. But the man was easily identified as President Lincoln…
George listened and went over to a shelf and pulled out a small book. There was the story. He. Added that the origin of the story came from a letter written by the wife of Cassius Lee to her friend Sophie DuPont. He directed me to the library at the Virginia Theological Seminary as they held copies of the original letter.
George will be missed. I miss him.

We want to include remembrances about George in the Alexandria Historical newsletter. We are all so saddened by his passing.
Will you please write a memory, a tribute, a recollection that we may include?
Please send this request to others who may have interacted with him at Special Collections, in AHS, or at Mount Vernon.
      We also appreciate fotos.

Thanks, char for posting on FB WITH FOTO. We have that and ask permission to put in newsletter.

Your words can be sent to me. If you can do this by September 5, it’d be great.
